Exhortations to Obedience

Thought for Today - July 31, 2023

Exhortations to Obedience

By: Robert A. Searles

"My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee. Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:  So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.  Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil.  It shall be health  to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.  Honour the Lord with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:  So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.  My son, despise not the chastening of the Lord; neither be weary of his correction: For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.  For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.  She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.  Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.  Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.  She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.  The Lord by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established  the heavens.  By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.

My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion:  So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.  Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.  When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.  Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.  For the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it. Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.  Devise  not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee. Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm.  Envy thou not the oppressor,  and choose none of his ways.  For the froward is abomination to the Lord: but his secret is with the righteous. The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just.  Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly.  The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools."  Proverbs 3

Righteousness

Thought For Today -  July 29, 2023

 Righteousness

By: Robert A. Searles

We as Christians ought to hunger and thirst after righteousness.  “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness for they shall be filled.” Math 5:6

Christ has imputed his righteousness to us if we are saved.  He made the first step toward us by offering his righteousness to all who will receive it.  Righteousness is simply being right  in our actions, and thoughts and attitudes toward God.

Our Lord and savior  was and still is  the only person who could measure up to this requirement.

Righteousness has its’ rewards:  Righteousness delivers from death. Proverbs 11:4
By right thoughts  and actions toward God, we are not only delivered from spiritual death, but often we will prolong our life on earth because we will have avoided those things that can destroy us.      “The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way.” Proverbs 11:5

When  our mind and our thoughts are in harmony and agreement with the mind of God, the Holy Spirit will direct our paths so that we follow a lifestyle that is good for us.
“The righteousness  of the upright shall. Deliver them.” Proverbs 11:6

Being right with God assures our  escape from the penalty of sin, and guarantees a sure place in Heaven because:  “Righteousness tendeth to life.” Proverbs 11:19

The seed of the righteous shall be delivered.” Proverbs 11: 21

Even our children and grandchildren, and future generations will reap the rewards of our righteousness, but on the other hand, they will also reap the penalties of our wickedness if we are wicked.\

“The desire of the righteous is only good.” Proverbs 11: 23

When we are right with God, when our thoughts and actions toward God are  right; when we seek God with all our heart; then we can trust that the desires of out hearts are from God. When we delight in the Lord, he gives us the desires of our heart.\

“The righteous shall flourish as a branch” Proverbs 11:28 and  “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he that winneth souls is wise. "Proverbs 11;30.

A good tree grows tall and spreads its’ leaves and branches and provides shade.  It provides a nesting place for birds and other creatures.  It provides food and offers protection.  May we  each live and have our being as a tree of life in thee, oh Lord, and win others to thee.

                               Psalm 26: 7

Salutation

Salutation

1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes,  To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ-their Lord and ours: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Thanksgiving for Spiritual Gifts

I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched in every way-with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge-  God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you. Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Divisions in the Church

I appeal to you, brothers and sisters,[in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.  My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe's household have informed me that there are quarrels among you.  What I mean is this: One of you says, "I follow Paul"; another, "I follow Apollos"; another, "I follow Cephas; still another, "I follow Christ."  Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Were you baptized in the name of Paul?

I thank God that I did not baptize any of you except Crispus and Gaius,  so no one can say that you were baptized in my name.  (Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I don't remember if I baptized anyone else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel-not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

Christ the Power and Wisdom of God

For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.  For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe.  Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom,  but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,  but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth.  But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. God chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things-and the things that are not-to nullify the things that are, so that no one may boast before him. It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God-that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.  Therefore, as it is written: "Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord."  1 Corinthians 1

Results of Justification

 Thought for Today - July 28, 2023

Results of Justification

By: Robert A. Searles

" Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.  And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;  And patience, experience; and experience, hope:  And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.  But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.  Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.  For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.  And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

 Adam and Christ

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.  And not as it was by one that sinned, so is the gift: for the judgment was by one to condemnation, but the free gift is of many offences unto justification. For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.) Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.  For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous. Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound: that as sin hath reigned unto death, even so might grace reign through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ our Lord."  Romans 5

Bread In The Wilderness

 Thought For  Today - July 27, 2023

 Bread In The Wilderness

 By Robert A. Searles

After the children of Israel had left Egypt under the leadership of Moses, they wandered in the wilderness for forty years because of their unbelief and disobedience, whereas, if they had believed and obeyed God, they could have immediately inherited the promised land.

Nevertheless, God in his compassion and mercy provided for their needs in the wilderness. He fed them by sending down manna from heaven, and they were told to gather a certain portion for themselves for each and every day. It could not be hoarded nor stored up. If they tried to store up so they would not have to gather every day, they would find it spoiled and stinking.

Likewise, God in his grace and compassion, has provided for us, manna, as it were, while we are wandering about in the wilderness of this world from the cradle to the grave.

The lord Jesus Christ is the heavenly bread which has been sent down from heaven to be our food and nourishment for each and every day. We are told if we will meet with him before the day begins, and eat his flesh and drink his blood by praying and meditation on his word, that we will have the nourishment we need to see us through the day. Abiding in him gives us eternal everlasting life. The more we gaze upon him, the more we become like him.

Look upon his holiness, his kindness, his confidence in God the Father. Look upon his willingness to have the Father's will accomplished in his life. Look upon his power in heaven and earth, look upon his health. Look upon him as our source, our beginning

God's storehouse is brimming over with all that we will ever have need of, and he invites us to come and gather all that we want or need today.

“Then said they unto him, what shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, this is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. They said, therefore unto him, what sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? What dost thou work? Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, he gave them bread from heaven to eat. Then Jesus said unto them, verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven and giveth life unto the world.

Then said they unto him, Lord evermore give us this bread. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.” John 6: 28-35

God fixes things!

Thought For Today - July 25, 2023
 God fixes things!

 By: Robert A. Searles
God, our heavenly father, is a kind, loving father who takes great delight in his redeemed children whom he has reconciled to himself by the precious blood of his only begotten, beloved son, the Lord Jesus Christ.

If we have been fortunate enough to have had a loving, kind earthly father here on earth, we know that we can run to "daddy", as it were, when we are afraid or in trouble, and he will rescue us. When our toys are broken, he will fix them. When we are afraid of the dark night, he will go with us.
Even better than we have ever known on earth, our heavenly father loves us with an infinite love that cannot be equaled. He who formed us from the dust of the earth, and breathed into our nostrils his own breath of life, will never forsake us. He will be there when we slip and fall to lift us up and set us back on our feet again. He is more than willing to forgive our sins when we acknowledge and confess them to him and ask for his forgiveness.
We make many mistakes in the course of our lifetime. We commit many sins; we go down wrong roads. Sometimes our lives are all but destroyed; our hearts are broken; our bodies are near destructions. But, God our father is there to fix them, and he does fix all things for us if we will allow him to. He can and will turn our mourning into dancing and rejoicing for his glory and honor.
"Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sack cloth, and girded me with gladness. to the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever." Psalm 30: 11,12.

My God,Why Hast Thou Forsaken Me?

Thought for Today -  July 24, 2023
My God,Why Hast Thou Forsaken  Me?
By: Robert A. Searles

Jesus cried out from the cross - "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" Mark15: 34; Psalm 22:1

God had temporarily forsaken his own son so that I and all who will receive him can be saved and reconciled to God our creator and father.

Psalm 22 describes the suffering and anguish which Christ suffered to accomplish our redemption.  Jesus spoke  through the words of David, the psalmist, these prophetic words long before Christ's appearance on earth. - "Be not far from me for trouble is near; for there is  none to help.  Many bulls have compassed me: strong bulls of Bashan have beset me round.  They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and roaring lion. I am poured out like water; all my bones are out of joint; my heart is like wax, it is melted in the midst of my bowels.  My strength is dried up like a potsherd. and my tongue cleaveth to my jaws; and thou hast brought me into the dust of death.  For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet.  I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. They part my garments among them, and cast lots for my vesture.  But  be not thou far from me, o Lord my strength, haste thee to help me. Deliver my soul from  the sword; my darling from  the power of the dog.  Save me from the lion's mouth:for thou hast heard me from the horns of the unicorn.  I will declare thy name unto my brethren: In the midst of the congregation will I praise  thee." Psalm 22: 11-22.

All this and much more did Christ suffer for us, and yet how ungrateful some of us are when we ignore his offer of love and compassion for us.

Christ came into the world to love everybody and to  reveal all the attributes of God the Father, He came to offer himself a sacrifice to pay in full for the sins of all mankind. He did not come to condemn us, but to save us who are already condemned because of our sin nature.

How depraved we all must be when we spit in the face of such genuine, holy love of God. They who spit upon Christ, and did all the things that he describes in the gospels and the psalms, could have received him as their Savior and redeemer, and enjoyed all the goodness and blessings  which he had to offer them.  Instead, they blasphemed and crucified him, and chose Barabas, a man of hate and crime to go free, which typifies all of us who have been freed from sin and condemnation by Christ's sacrifice for us.

We  deserved to be the recipents of all the brutality and receive everlasting punishment.  We are guilty, but Christ was not guilty of any sin or wrong doing.  He was perfect in every way and knew no sin. He who had no sin of his own, took our sins and became sin for us.

May we today remember these things and offer up our praises and thanksgiving for all that we have in Christ Jesus.

"Ye that fear the Lord praise him; all ye the seed of Jacob, glorify him; and fear him all ye the seed of Israel" Psalm 22: 23

"All the ends of the world shall  shall remember  and turn unto the Lord: and the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee." Psalm 22: 27.
