Judgment Or Mercy, Which Will It Be?

Thought For Today –  September 22,2024
Judgment Or Mercy, Which Will It Be?
By: Robert A. Searles

Are you one among those who advocate the removal of the ten commandments from public view, or one who would ban prayer during our public events and educational systems?  Are you one of those who denies the existence of almighty God, and consequently are lost, and without hope, ether in this world or the next?

If you are a member of this group,  I, as a servant of Almighty God, am pressed to warn you of the consequences of your denial of one who loves you with an everlasting love, and desires your eternal salvation and future welfare.

I know that the Lord God  Jehovah – the Lord Jesus Christ exists and lives today because of all that he has bestowed upon me and my family in love, mercy, and salvation.  God is merciful, and extends his love and mercy to all who will respond and receive him; however, God is also a righteous judge, and will bring final judgment  upon all those who reject and deny him.

As God warned his people Israel, through the prophet Isaiah many centuries ago, about that which would become of them if they continued in their sinful ways,   I must warn you today that God will certainly bring righteous judgment on all those who spurn his words of warning and reject his offer of salvation through Jesus Christ.  Listen to that which he said to Israel, and that which he is saying to all of us today.

“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!  Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight!  Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink: which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him!  Therefore as the fire devoureth the stubble, and the flame consumeth the chaff, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust! Because they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the holy one of Israel.  Therefore is the anger of the Lord kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth his hand  against them and hath smitten them; and the hills did tremble, and their carcases were torn in the midst of the streets, for all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.” Isaiah 5: 20-25.

If this should be all that you have to look forward to because of your unbelief, why not recognize God's offer of love and mercy before it is too late, and receive Christ as your savior today.  He will not turn you away if you sincerely repent and receive him by faith.  May God be gracious unto you!

Go About Doing Good

 Thought for Today - August 8, 2023
Go About Doing Good

  By: Robert A. Searles

As Christ our Lord went about doing good, we Christians ought  to be continuing the work and ministry of our Lord by going about doing good.  Christ was in the world offering salvation to all who would believe and receive him.  He gave rest to the weary and comforted the lonely; he healed the sick and raised the dead, and brought new hope to the hopeless.  We ought to continue doing all that God will give us the power to do so that Christ's work and ministry might continue through us.  God may not give us the power to heal the sick or raise the dead (he could if it was his purpose), but he has commissioned us to offer salvation to the lost through his name and to bear each other's  burdens, and to share each other's sorrows and joys, and to make life easier for those around us.  We ought to be so secure in our own salvation and the love of God that we can forget ourselves and concentrate on the needs of others.
“With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not o men; knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doeth, the same shall he receive of the Lord, whether he be bond or free.” Ephesians 6: 7, 8
.  God will be no man's debtor, we cannot out give or out serve the Lord. When we go about doing good in the service of the Lord, we will find ourselves in a  combat zone with all the forces of the devil against us.  We must put on the armor and use all the defenses that God has provided for us.
“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.  Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the  wiles of the  devil.  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.  Wherefore  take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the  evil  day, and having done all to stand.” Ephesians 6: 10-13

Is God Real To You?

 Thought for Today  -  June 3, 2024

 Is God Real To You?

 By: Robert A. Searles

Is God real in your life? What, or who do you really think God is? Is God an intricate part of you as an individual? Is God as much a part of you as your breathing, or your heartbeat, or your walking and moving about? Is God just an ideal; a good idea? Is God just a philosophy of life that we pick from a book? Is God just a psychological means of control to keep us from doing immoral things? Is God just a good thought that we think about for a few moments each day, and then close the book and put it on the shelf for another day, or until something bad or unpleasant happens to us for which we have no answer, and we recognize that we need wisdom beyond ourselves? What and who is God to you as an individual?

God's word teaches us that God is a spirit, a supernatural invisible spirit. They that worship God must worship him in spirit. God's word teaches us that the supernatural invisible spirit of God manifested himself in the person and body of Jesus of Nazareth while he was on earth. Jesus ascended into heaven after his resurrection, and sent the Holy Spirit to literally live in our bodies.

If we choose and desire to have it so, God the Holy Spirit will clean our house and literally, as a matter of fact, actually take up residence in our bodies. At this point it is God himself living in us to will and to do of his good pleasure. If we choose to have it so, it will be God himself in us creating our wants and desires, and it will be God himself in us controlling our thoughts and the very movements of our bodies.

If God is really living in us, we don't really have to set up a lot of rules and regulations for ourselves, because it will be God himself that will be in control., We have to grasp the principle that we were made and designed to be the house and temple of God the place where God lives, and walks, and has his being. Of course , before God can live in us, we must be changed, we must be born again through faith in the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ, and we must willingly yield ourselves and open the door so that the Holy Spirit can move in and take charge.

Where do you go for counsel? Do you look to people, someone whom you admire for their great intellectual capacities, or do you look within yourselves, to the Holy Spirit of God who dwells and lives in each one of his born again children?

”Woe to the rebellious children, saith the Lord, that take counsel, but not of me; and that covereth with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin that walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt." Isaiah 30: 1,2

. Did it ever occur to you that if you look to a person for counsel, even though that person may be a child of God, and even though that person may be much admired for his outward appearance and apparent service to the Lord, he may not be completely yielded himself to the spirit of God, and so be limited as to the wisdom he has from God? God want us to look to no person for counsel. He wants us to come directly to the throne of grace and seek his wisdom and counsel.

Do we pitch our tents, as Lot did, so that we can look toward Sodom? Have we separated ourselves unto God, just enough, so that if we wanted to, it would not be too difficult to take a walk down into Egypt, as it were, which is typical of the world of sin and bondage from which we came. Are we prone to trust in the shadow of Egypt? Do we say that we love and trust God, but after all when we get hungry we must run after the things of the world to get satisfied?

When we trust in men, and in the world system, and have no real vital relationship with the living God who wants to live and walk and abide in us, then no wonder we have no power, and are frustrated and confused.

“Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion.”Isaiah30:3

Study To Show Thyself Approved

Thought for Today - September 5, 2023
Study To Show Thyself Approved
By: Robert A. Searles

“Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2: 15.

This is one area where many of us who are Christians are disobedient, and of course, all disobedience is sin.  The bible commands the believer to search and study the scriptures daily to see if the things we hear are really true lest we be led astray and deceived by false doctrine.  God has given us the written word to be a compass for our lives, to lead us through uncharted seas.

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a guide unto my path.” Psalm 119: 105.

Many times we wander out of the will of God because we do not meditate on the Word of God to know what his will is  for us.  If we search the scriptures, we shall find, if we knock, it shall be opened unto us, if we ask in faith, we shall receive
.
“All scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” 2 Timothy 3: 16,17

If any of us have been negligent in this area of our lives and are not actively engaged in the study of the scriptures, we ought to confess this to God that we might be forgiven of this sin and get back into the perfect will of God as he instructs us from his word.

The Hidden Enemy Of Our Soul

Thought for Today - September 4, 2023

The Hidden Enemy Of Our Soul

By: Robert A. Searles

There is an invisible, unseen enemy that is ever present with us in the world today, and is the destroyer of individuals, families, and nations, and if allowed to go unchecked will bring each of us down to the lowest hell, disgrace, and degradation. It is one of the besetting sins which is inherent in each and every one of us from our birth and remains with us through our unregenerate natural state. It is the root cause of most of the misery, wars, bloodshed and turmoil that we encounter in our present day world.

This diabolical enemy is very subtitle, and can assume many different identities. It was present in the heart of Lucifer, God's created angel of light, when he became jealous of God and was expelled from Heaven because of his EVIL AMBITION.
“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How art thou cut down to the ground, which did weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most high. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.”Isaiah 14: 12-15

It was found also in the heart and mind of Eve when she was beguiled by the serpent in the garden of Eden.
“And when the women saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was PLEASANT TO THE EYES, and a tree to be DESIRED to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also to her husband with her and he did eat.” Gen. 3: 6.

The same enemy overwhelmed David in an unguarded moment, and enticed him to seek after and commit adultery with Bathsheba and eventually murder her husband, which later caused him grief and the death of his son, Absalom.

“And it came to pass in an eventide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the King's house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was BEAUTIFUL TO LOOK UPON. And David sent and inquired after the woman, and one said, is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? And David sent messengers and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness, and she returned to her house. And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.” 2 Samuel 11: 2-5

Something beautiful to look upon awakened the enemy of David's soul, an unlawful SEXUAL DESIRE for that which was morally off limits to him.

This enemy of our soul is always at work, to some degree, in all of us, and most of the time we do not recognize it as we should, as the origin of sin. It may be known as a passionate, overmastering desire or appetite, an excessive longing or desire for objects or situations for which we have no right to desire or expect, or a craving for power, or an enviable lifestyle, evil ambition, strong overwhelming sexual desire. Whatever we may call it, God our Father calls it by its' rightful name, the sin of the flesh – LUST.

We are warned in the scriptures to be aware of, and to flee from our enemy - the lust of the flesh which bringeth forth death.

“Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him. Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: but every man is tempted when he is drawn away of his own lust and enticed. Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin,: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.” James 1: 12-15

“Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.” 2 Timothy 2: 22.
Let us all henceforth, take heed to God's warning and be aware of and flee from our enemy -  THE LUST OF THE FLESH

God's Promise Of The Holy Spirit

Thought forToday -  September 2, 2023

God's Promise Of The Holy Spirit

 By: Robert A. Searles

When Jesus, after his resurrection, left the earth and ascended into heaven, he promised the apostles and other disciples who were present and witnessed his ascent, that in the manner as they saw him go into heaven, he would one day return and receive them unto himself, and while they waited for his return, he would send to them another comforter, the third person of the Godhead, the Holy Spirit to be their comforter, teacher, and guide.

He commissioned them to go into all the world and preach the gospel, but to wait in the city of Jerusalem until they received the anointing and power of the Holy Spirit.

“If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another comforter, that he may abide with you for ever, even the spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more, but ye see me, because I live, ye shall live also.” John 14: 15-19

“Then opened he their understanding that they might understand the scriptures, and said unto them, thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day: and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things, And behold I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. Luke 24: 45-49

“And being assembled together with them, he commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, it is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you; and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the utermost part of the earth. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; which also said, ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have see him go into heaven.” Acts 1: 4-11

“And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marveled, saying one to another, behold are not all these which speak Galileans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?” Acts 2: 1-8

“And they were all amazed and in doubt, saying one to another, what meaneth this? Others mocking said, these men are full of new wine.” Acts 2: 12,13

“But Peter standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, ye men of Judea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: for these men are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel.” Acts 2: 14, 15, 16.

“And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.” Joel 2: 28, 29

Unless we have the Holy Spirit dwelling within us, we cannot know God, and we are not saved. We can know when we are truly saved because the Holy Spirit which dwells within each believer, bears witness with our spirit that we are indeed the children of God.

“But the natural man receiveth not the things of the spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him; neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” 1 Corinthians 2: 14.

When we are born into the world, we are born naturally – dead to the spirit of God because of an inherited sin nature. Jesus said: in order to know God and be saved and have the Holy Spirit of God dwelling within us we must be born again .

“There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, verily, verily, I say unto thee, except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother'swomb and be born? Jesus answered , verily, verily I say unto thee, except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, ye must be born again.” John 3: 1 -7.

If any one is to be saved it must be the work of God alone to draw that person to himself, not by the mere choice of the person's will, or of his good works, or good intentions, or the will of others.

“Jesus said: Murmur not among yourselves. No man can come to me except the Father which hath sent me draw him, and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, and they shall all be taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.” John 6: 43-45.

“And it shall come to pass that whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Acts 2: 21.

To be saved means to be born again by the power of God when we are willing to confess to God that we have sinned and want his forgiveness, and believe that Jesus paid the penalty for all our sins by his death on the cross, and that we are justified before God by his death and resurrection. When this happens, we become new born babes in the family of God, and his Holy Spirit enters our lives, and we become spiritually alive to the things of God.

When we are saved, we are saved forever and sealed by the Holy Spirit, and we are promised eternal life – that is we will enjoy God's quality of life as long as God lives, and that is forever.

“That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ in whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession unto the praise of his glory.” Ephesians 1: 12-14

“How shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation?” Hebrews 2:3

Consider the Goodness of God!

Thought for Today - September 1, 2023
 Consider the Goodness of God!

By:Robert A Searles

Consider the goodness of God. Think of the goodness of God toward you as an individual, and then think of the goodness of God to your family.

But for the goodness and grace of God, where would we be?  It was said of John Bunyan, the author of "Pilgrim's Progress", that he  looked at a drunken bum lying in the gutter and he made the statement: "But for the grace of God, there go I".

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God: not of works lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2: 8,9.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16.
Because of the goodness of God and his love for us, we are rescued from the bondage of Satan and set free as the redeemed children of God.

Because of the goodness of God, we no longer have to be slaves to the world, the flesh, and the devil. Because of the goodness of God, we can know love, joy, peace, and freedom from guilt and fear. We can enjoy the things that God has given us to enjoy.

Because of the goodness and grace of God we have health and strength and are able to live normal lives. We see the goodness of God in all creation. We see the goodness of God in God's faithfulness.

" .......and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone.   and the Lord descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, the Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, long suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth. Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children unto the third and to the fourth generations." Exodus 34:4, 5-7.

"He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the Lord. By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth. He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap; he layeth up the depth in storehouses. Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spake and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast." Psalm 33: 5-9

"Thou crownest the year with thy goodness, and thy paths drop fatness." Psalm 65:11.

"Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and long suffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance." Romans 2:4.

The goodness of God demands nothing less than our gratitude, our love, and dedication to God's service ,and obedience to him. If we give God less - then, we are despising his goodness.

"Behold, therefore, the goodness and severity of God; on them which fell, severity; but toward thee ,goodness, if thou continue in his goodness; otherwise thou shalt be cut off." Romans 11:22.
