Is There Oil in Our Lamps?

  Thought for Today - May 17, 2024

Is There Oil in Our Lamps?

Today's Message - Is There Oil in our lamps, and are our wicks trimmed?

 By: Robert A. Searles

If this should be the day that our LORD should come for his bride, the church, or for any one of us individually, would there be oil in our lamps (the Holy Spirit), or would it be too late for us to get ready to meet him? - a good thought to ponder.

"Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh." Matthew 25:1-13

Good Advice for All

Thought for Today - May 16, 2023

Good advice for All !

By: Robert A Searles

" Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting, with strife.  A prudent servant will rule over a disgraceful son and will share the inheritance as one of the family.  The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests the heart.  A wicked person listens to deceitful lips; a liar pays attention to a destructive tongue.  Whoever mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker; whoever gloats over disaster will not go unpunished. Children's children are a crown to the aged, and parents are the pride of their children.  Eloquent lips are unsuited to a godless fool- how much worse lying lips to a ruler!  A bribe is seen as a charm by the one who gives it; they think success will come at every turn. Whoever would foster love covers over an offense, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends. A rebuke impresses a discerning person more than a hundred lashes a fool. Evildoers foster rebellion against God; the messenger of death will be sent against them. Better to meet a bear robbed of her cubs than a fool bent on folly.  Evil will never leave the house of one who pays back evil for good.  Starting a quarrel is like breaching a dam; so drop the matter before a dispute breaks out.  Acquitting the guilty and condemning the innocent- the Lord detests them both.  Why should fools have money in hand to buy wisdom, when they are not able to understand it?A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity.  One who has no sense shakes hands in pledge and puts up security for a neighbor.  Whoever loves a quarrel loves sin; whoever builds a high gate invites destruction.  One whose heart is corrupt does not prosper; one whose tongue is perverse falls into trouble.  To have a fool for a child brings grief; there is no joy for the parent of a godless fool. A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.  The wicked accept bribes in secret to pervert the course of justice.  A discerning person keeps wisdom in view, but a fool's eyes wander to the ends of the earth. A foolish son brings grief to his father and bitterness to the mother who bore him. If imposing a fine on the innocent is not good, surely to flog honest officials is not right.  The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even-tempered.  Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues."Proverbs 17

Serve the Lord With Gladness!

 Thought for Today - May 15, 2024

Serve The Lord With Gladness!

 By: Robert A. Searles

Serve the Lord with gladness! We who are saved ought to love to serve the Lord. To know that we bring joy to the heart of God when we love him and serve him with a willing spirit ought to make us happy and complete. What better way to spend a life than to faithfully and joyfully be in the service of the King of kings and Lord of lords? He loved us so much that while we were contemptible sinners, he gave his only begotten son to die for us, but praise the Lord he arose and is now at the Father's right hand interceding for us and one day will come again to planet earth and rule and reign in righteousness.

Chasing the Wind?

 Thought for Today - May 13, 2023

Chasing the Wind

By: Robert A. Searles

Are you trying to find joy, happiness, peace and ful.filment in everything that is worldly, apart from God?   Are you chasing the wind and never able to catch it?  Listen to what the preacher has to say

All Is Vanity

The words of the Teacher, son of David, king in Jerusalem: "Meaningless! Meaningless!" says the Teacher. "Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless."  What do people gain from all their labors at which they toil under the sun?

Generations come and generations go, but the earth remains forever.  The sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to where it rises.  The wind blows to the south and turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning on its course. All streams flow into the sea, yet the sea is never full. To the place the streams come from, there they return again.  All things are wearisome, more than one can say. The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing.

What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. Is there anything of which one can say, "Look! This is something new"? It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time. 1 No one remembers the former generations, and even those yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow them.

The Experience of the Preacher

I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens. What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind!  I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind. What is crooked cannot be straightened; what is lacking cannot be counted. I said to myself, "Look, I have increased in wisdom more than anyone who has ruled over Jerusalem before me; I have experienced much of wisdom and knowledge."  Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind. For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief.

1 I said to myself, "Come now, I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good." But that also proved to be meaningless.  "Laughter," I said, "is madness. And what does pleasure accomplish?"  I tried cheering myself with wine, and embracing folly-my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see what was good for people to do under the heavens during the few days of their lives. 4 I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself and planted vineyards. I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of fruit trees in them. I made reservoirs to water groves of flourishing trees. I bought male and female slaves and had other slaves who were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me. I amassed silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces. I acquired male and female singers, and a harem[ as well-the delights of a man's heart. I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem before me. In all this my wisdom stayed with me.  I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my labor, and this was the reward for all my toil. Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun.

Then I turned my thoughts to consider wisdom, and also madness and folly. What more can the king's successor do than what has already be I saw that wisdom is better than folly, just as light is better than darkness.  The wise have eyes in their heads, while the fool walks in the darkness; but I came to realize that the same fate overtakes them both. Then I said to myself, "The fate of the fool will overtake me also. What then do I gain by being wise?" I said to myself, "This too is meaningless."  For the wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered; the days have already come when both have been forgotten. Like the fool, the wise too must die!

So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.  I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me.  And who knows whether that person will be wise or foolish? Yet they will have control over all the fruit of my toil into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless. So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun.  For a person may labor with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then they must leave all they own to another who has not toiled for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune.  What do people get for all the toil and anxious striving with which they labor under the sun? All their days their work is grief and pain; even at night their minds do not rest. This too is meaningless.  A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God,  for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment? To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner he gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

My Soul Cries Out For God!

 Thought For Today - May 12, 2023

My Soul Cries Out For God!
By: Robert A. Searles

My soul cries out for God!  I need thee, Oh how I need thee, every hour I need thee.  When I do not hear from God,  I sink in the mire of despair and   am despondent.  God has promised that he will never  leave me, nor forsake me, so that I may boldly say, the lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.

If I am cut off from God's fellowship it may be that there is  still sin in my life.  I may be neglecting to eat the bread of life, the word of God.  I may have bitter envying and strife in my heart.  I may have ought against my brother that needs to be reconciled.  Perhaps I had opportunity to do good, and did it not.  I may be insulting God by being anxious and worrisome and not trusting God for my daily needs.  Whatever the sin may be, greater is the remedy, for "where sin abounds, grace does much more abound." and "If we will confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

Can I doubt the care of God for  me for today and tomorrow when he has kept me and provided for me through all these years?  If God has given his best, the Lord Jesus Christ to be my Savior, will he not with him also give me all things freely to enjoy?

Yes! He will! And he does, and what he will and has done for me, my Christian brother or sister, he will do for you also if you will trust him.
