Why Go Back To Egypt?
The children of Israel always had
a pull toward Egypt from whence they had so miraculously been
delivered. They so quickly forgot how God had delivered them from
the bondage of Pharaoh, and brought them across the Red Sea, and led
them in the wilderness and how he fought for them and delivered them
from their enemies, and gave them angel's food to eat.
Likewise, the Christian is prone
to wander away from God, and tends o desire again the things of the
world, the flesh, and the devil. How soon many of us forget, once we
have been delivered, how terrible the bondage and slavery of sin.
Sinful pleasures look attractive to us again, and the deceitfulness
of the things around us seem to draw us back into the very bondage
from which we have so miraculously been delivered by the death,
burial, and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
God warned his people Israel of
the danger they were in when they allowed this to happen, and the
same warning is given to Christians today who tend to have their
affections alienated away from their Savior.
“Woe to the rebellious children,
saith the Lord, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with
a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin;
That walk to go down into Egypt and have not asked at my mouth; to
strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the
shadow of Egypt. Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your
shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion.” Isaiah
30: 1-3
